Moving Mountains

As I wrote earlier today, right now I am in the middle of a life-changing moment, on whether or not I got accepted in this new company..

I have been staring at my phone for more than 10 times, and while I’m waiting for that telephone (which might not be ringing at all, or in other word.. “they find someone else..”), whatever it is, I’m trying to calm myself down, do my best to keep my head up, and believe that,

no matter what happen, I will still be able to move mountains.

So I scrolled through my music folder and these are the songs to help me get through this ‘awfully-terribly-extremely-horribly LOOOOOOONG day’ without losing faith to myself.

Yuck – Shook Down

I just found a very very absolutely, lovely song by Yuck on SoundCloud. Check it out, it’s very romantic and it will be great for the upcoming valentine..

🙂

Here’s the lyric so that we all can sing along..

To collapse in a sugar cane
Suck it sweet to kill the pain
There was someone I was looking for
There is no more

My tongue is weak from a kick or two
The word is dry, I think of you
Tie my face to the back of a jet
To keep my essence there

And it’s been a week
And it’s been a week too long
There are several things
That I’ve been doing wrong

You see the time it takes for you
Is the time it takes for me
Oh, so don’t agree

If it’s late then I will go
Turn the lights out, turn it slow
Like you turned me upside down
And faced the ground

Spinnin’ left I spin at you
Listen girl I think of you
Back up by the back of the chair
I left you there

And it’s been a week
And it’s been a week too long
There are several things
That I’ve been doing wrong

You see the time it takes for you
Is the time it takes for me
Oh, so don’t agree

You can be my destiny
You can mean that much to me
You can be my destiny
You can mean that much to me

You can be my destiny
You can mean that much to me
You can be my destiny
You can mean that much to me

Bomb The Music Industry!

One thing I regretfully admit, WHY DID IT TOOK ME TOO DAMN LONG TO DISCOVER THESE AWESOME DUDES!???

Listening to their Vacation (2011) album kinda reminds me of Weezer and Kemuri, with a touch of The Strokes (pardon me for not giving you links to those great bands, go search yourself will ya?). Yet the lyrics are all AMAZING, I repeat, A-MA-ZING !!! It’s funny but not stupid, and it didn’t sound they’re trying too hard, and successfully made me smile, felt connected and wanted more!

The 2011 Vacation album starts with the song “Campaign for A Better Weekend”  which tells us about a guy who decided to get out the house on his newly-fixed bicycle. But then turns out his decision was wrong. Because then he got hit by a car. In the end of the song, he said, “I can’t shrug off the awesome weather but I can surely dress my wounds. It felt just like a vacation but still we complained until we all felt jaded and started to hate it.” The next song is “Vocal Coach” which is about boredom (I guess). The vocal tunes in this song sounds awesome, cheerful, and flawless.

And there’s “Everybody That You Love” with its lyric “all the people I love the best, are starting to get frustrated with my being a mess..” which describes the message they’re trying to deliver. That they are funny guys, but are easily bored and there were times when they’re disappointing their friends and families. Well, aren’t we all?

Next song is “The Shit That You Hate.” A critic for anyone who complains too much about life. The message? Figure this out: “so hold onto your home  and onto your hope, sorrow don’t answer problems, nobody cares, we’re all in trouble, the shit that you hate don’t make you special..”

Then comes my favorite song in this album: “Hurricane Waves.” A story about PROCRASTINATING! Ha! Awesome, great job describing it, guys! “I can wait till tomorrow to pay my rent and start to grow up..”

There are still few more songs left but I have to go home now. All I can say is that this is one of the most valuable discovery of all time. No I didn’t exaggerate this! If you don’t believe me, try listening to their album and experience my admiration!

Glee, Not Geek

When I first watched Glee, I fell in love instantly. It was so full of inspiration, funny, and fresh, especially after your TV has been hijacked by so many reality series, one after another. Also at first, I never have any particular hatred towards Kurt Hummel (the gay character, played brilliantly by actor Chris Colfer), until, there was Blaine. His gay partner. Then I began to have doubts on whether this series is suitable for teens. I’m not against gay or whatever, but I’m not crazy about it either. This is one problem that I left myself undecided on how to respond.

It’s even more terrifying than The Walking Dead, and even more depressing compared to Grey’s Anatomy. Since I myself had been the kind of person who grew up by being heavily influenced by television, I have this huge fear of Glee, for have spreading the wrong message to teenagers all around the world. In my narrow-minded opinion, of course.

I use to have goosebumps and couldn’t get enough of Glee’s videos such as Imagine, One, or Marry You. I thought of those episodes as highly inspiring. But it’s a sad, sad, thing they can’t keep it that way. This video below proved their identity loss.

It even gave me a different kind of goosebumps. I felt sick watching Blaine dancing. I didn’t see the nerdy, clumsy, Rachel, anymore, since Glee has made her a very popular girl on the red carpet. I just feel that she’s too pretty to be Rachel now. In fact, no one in Glee is a geek anymore!!

It’s no longer a TV series that I’m going to wait anxiously for, and I feel sad for teenagers today for not having a great idol that they can look up to. Back in the 90s when I was growing up, we use to have so many great music and it was very diverse, from Mc Hammer to Metallica, from Whitney Houston to Nirvana. But today, there are only a few with solid characters and identity.

So instead of watching Glee, and learned nothing about life, we might as well simplify our lives and enjoy music like we used to, by jumping around the house and banged our heads. With these 8 crazy people that just celebrated their 10th anniversary. They’re adorable aren’t they? It’s hard not to fall in love with them.

I know I did.

Hands Down

When you write a song from the heart, you will touch many hearts. So is Dashboard Confessional’s “Hands Down” written by the band’s lead vocalist Chris Carrabba, which was more a memoir of one of his best date during his early 20s. Even Wikipedia has a page about the song. The lyric is lovely, honest and I must say one of the most romantic song ever.

One of the best part of the song which always makes me smile:

The words are hushed lets not get busted, just lay entwined here, undiscovered..
Safe in here from all the stupid questions, “hey did you get some?”
Man, that is so dumb..
Stay quiet, stay near, stay close, so they can’t hear.
so we can get some..

Go see the lyric yourself.

Java Rockin’ Land VS Anti-Smoking Campaign

kapanlagi.com

For any concert freaks, the upcoming 2011 Java Rockin’ Land (JRL) with line-ups such as 30 Seconds To Mars, Good Charlotte, The Cranberries, and other international (and local) artists would surely be hard to miss. But despite to us being anxious about it, an online petition has been made, which asks musicians to reconsider playing at JRL, because the event is being sponsored by one of Indonesia’s biggest tobacco company: Gudang Garam.

“.. by performing at a tobacco-sponsored festival in Indonesia they will be helping to sell cigarettes to young people – a product that leads to death, disability and hardship, in addition to causing environmental damage.”

According to the online petition, artists such as Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, and Alicia Keys have successfully requested Indonesian promoters to removed tobacco advertising and sponsorship from their concert. And now they want those JRL line-ups to do the same.

Google Images

Music events will attract plenty of young individuals, and sponsorship from a tobacco company was believed as part of a massive marketing strategy to create more and younger smokers. This is going against WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (where Indonesia is one of the few countries who haven’t signed it yet). Some artists such as 30 Seconds To Mars is also known for their concern towards social causes such as earthquake relief, etc. Hence, playing in a tobacco-sponsored event will be considered a deviation.

How about that? The dream to enjoy a concert with international artists is about to fall to pieces, due to some anti-smoking petition.

I respect the movement, I support the government’s rule to prohibit smoking in public places, and I think we should learn from Japan and some European countries who put a lot of taxes on their tobacco products, along with horrific images on the cigarette package.

But this is Indonesia, a country on which more than 30 percent of its people are heavy smokers. If the petition thinks that artists who played in JRL will help selling cigarettes to us, well, I think they’re WRONG.

Those companies don’t need anyone to help them selling those packs of cigarette, because they already have loyal consumers. Cigarette price in Indonesia is relatively cheap, and it comes in good packaging (and by good I mean it doesn’t have any terrifying images of tobacco-related diseases). So despite my respect for the anti-smoking petition, I also think their effort will be useless.

Sponsoring a music event is just one of the regular strategy used by tobacco companies in Indonesia. In fact, they are often engaged in more ‘socially responsible’ strategies such as creating foundations, hosting international sport events, and provide scholarships. So despite their products which have killed hundreds of thousands Indonesian people every year, they are also doing some good things, and like it or not, created a lot of job opportunities.

So who’s bad and who’s good? I absolutely have no idea.

In the end, to my personal opinion, if the international petition make its way to those artists and canceled their performance on JRL, we in Indonesia can only learn to accept the bitter facts that not only we have failed to watch the live performances of our favorite artists, we are still going to be in the third place in the world, after China and India, as the country whose people have fallen deeply in love with the habit of smoking cigarettes.

[REVIEW] Album: Florence & The Machine – Lungs (2009)

Florence + The Machine "Lungs" (2009)

Yes, it was because of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards which was held a couple of weeks ago that I discovered Florence and The Machine when they were nominated for Best New Artist, if I’m not mistaken. I might be a mommy but I’ve always and will always try to keep up with the music industry, I was instantly attracted to “Dog Days Are Over” (watch the official video on YouTube).

Dog Days Are Over is also the first song of the album “Lungs” which was released on July 6, 2009. I still don’t quite understand what Florence is trying to tell us through this song. From my point of view, she is trying to remind us about all the things (or person) that matters the most for us. While love, due to its pain and uncertainty, must be left behind. I couldn’t agree more! Dog days are over, dog days are done, it is a must that we should left everything that causes us pain.

It’s a good choice to put the song as the first in this album, because her next songs are somewhat confusing. So I fast forwarded until I bumped into “Kiss With A Fist” which basically tells a story about domestic violence, in a good way, where having a fight is a normal part of any relationship. On her blog, Florence said that she wrote this song after graduating from high school. The lyrics of this song is very creative and made me laugh, such as “you hit me once, I hit you back, you gave a kick, I gave a slap, you smashed a plate over my head, then I set the fire into our bed.”

Another song that took my attention is titled “You’ve Got The Love.” Somehow I see a spiritual side in this song, that no matter how hurtful life can be, and although at times you might lost your faith, having someone to love and love us in return is still helpful for us to see things clearly. “Calling You A Liar” is also catchy, just like this other song I like “Cosmic Love.”

Florence grew up in Camberwell, south London. One of her earliest musical memories is standing on top of the trunk where her dad kept his vinyl collection, dancing with him to the Rolling Stones. She felt that she wrote her best songs when she’s drunk because that’s when the freedom came. “You’re lucid,” she explains, “but you’re not really there. You’re floating through your own thoughts, and you can pick out what you need.” (read more about Florence on her blog).
